Summer is when I have the most time to relax and entertain—most of us do. That’s why it’s ironic that no season makes me feel less relaxed or ready to entertain. Long, hot days make me cranky and sticky—I feel dirty before I even start cooking. I’m not very good at doing nothing at all, but even less so when I’m covered in my own sweat! Yuck! That said, I never pass on visits from the friends and family who are more available in the summer. And by the time the food and drink hit the table, I’m over my issues and I roll sweaty and deep into the “summer fun” of it all.
This August, I turn 50, and to celebrate, I’m writing a book that’s a wild and fun mash-up of cookbook and memoir of my half century. I hope the stories and recipes inspire laughs, a few happy tears, and an appetite for good food and for life. Look for it next fall. As for parties and celebrations, I prefer low-maintenance small gatherings, and as I’ve said, I prefer things cool to cold. Solution: As you read this, I’m probably in Denmark.
Our team wants you, too, to chill out. I love our features on “The No-Sweat Summer Dinner Party” and “50 Ways to Awesome Up Your Ice Cream”. And for 30-Minute Meals, I focused on fun food that offers a wink and a nod to foods I love in other seasons. (I love pizza, but in the summer, I swap chicken paillard for pizza dough.) Also, it’s that time of year to cook with corn and to make meals that can be served for brunch, lunch, or dinner, like Panzanella Salad with Frico Eggs. Other faves in this issue are the chocolate chip Pizza Cookie Cake from NYC’s Flour Shop bakery—obsessed!—and John’s cocktail of the month. But they may be outshone by our Kids Who Cook Mexican cookout with mocktails.
