5 Annoying Summer Hair Problems & How to Fix Them
If Your Hair Is...
A Frizz Fest
The cuticles of curly or wavy hair don’t lie flat, which makes them an easy target for humidity and frizz, says New York City stylist Juan Carlos Maciques. Try Love Beauty and Planet’s Smooth and Serene Leave-In Smoothie Cream ($9) to tame and nourish.
Limp + Lifeless
Straight hair may dodge the frizz bullet, but “moisture in the air can weigh your hair down and make it look limp,” says Maciques. Mist with Oribe Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray (from $22), which creates a barrier against moisture without adding weight.
Dried + Fried
Salt or chlorine in water coupled with blazing-hot sunshine is a damage-causing double whammy. Once or twice a week, use a deep-conditioning treatment on your hair, such as Garnier Fructis 1-Minute Hair Mask Plus Coconut Extract ($4.50).
Dyed + Dull
“Picture a faded lawn chair,” says William Francis, a colorist at Sally Hershberger salon in NYC. “That’s what the sun does to dyed hair.” A leave-in product with UV filters, like Klorane Protective Oil with Ylang-Ylang Wax ($18), will help shield against the sun’s damaging effects.
A Grease Bomb
“Heat and humidity exacerbate the production of oil in the scalp, which makes hair look greasy,” says Maciques. Deep-clean the scalp with a clarifying shampoo, like Drybar’s On the Rocks Clarifying Charcoal Shampoo ($26).
