30+ Strawberry Recipes & Buying Guide
Buy
Look for deep-red berries that are shiny and firm with fresh green leaves. Watch out for white “shoulders”: Strawberries won’t ripen further once they’ve been picked. And if your budget allows, spring for organic; nonorganic strawberries are found to have high levels of pesticide residue and top the Dirty Dozen list.
Store
Store-bought berries are often packed tightly, which can cause them to deteriorate quickly. To keep them fresher longer, arrange the berries in a single layer on a paper towel in a plastic container with a lid. Stored that way, they’ll keep for up to 3 days in the fridge.
Prep
Wash berries just before eating. Rinse, then pat dry before hulling them. If you’re the patient sort, let your strawberries stand for about an hour at room temperature before eating. They’ll taste even sweeter!
