Orange Salad with Red Wine Syrup & Mint

If you usually think of fruit salad as a penance for the eggs Benedict next to it on a brunch plate, this orange salad will change your mind. It's magic, according to our editor-in-chief Lauren Iannotti, and the word “salad” doesn’t do it justice. It's a taste sensation, something refreshing to go with any rich meal—or nothing at all.

  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 6 allspice berries
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 6 oranges
  • 2 tbsp. torn fresh mint


In skillet, bring wine, sugar, and spices to a boil over high, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium. Simmer wine mixture until syrupy, about 10 minutes. Strain syrup; let cool. Cut peel and white pith from oranges. Slice oranges into rounds; arrange on platter. Drizzle with syrup. Garnish with mint.
