John's Cocktail: Mumbai Mule

Start to Finish: 10 minutes (plus 1 hour for cooling)

Servings: Makes 2 cocktails


  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. grated peeled fresh ginger
  • 1 tsp. grated peeled fresh turmeric
  • 3 oz. vodka
  • 2 oz. fresh lime juice plus 2 lime wheels, for garnish
  • 6 to 8 oz. ginger beer


In a small saucepan, stir the sugar and 1/4 cup water over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the ginger and turmeric. Remove from heat and let cool about 1 hour. Strain the ginger-turmeric syrup. Into each of 2 ice-filled copper mugs, pour 1 1/2 oz. vodka, 1 oz. lime juice, and 1/2 oz. of the ginger-turmeric syrup. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with lime wheels.
