Vanilla ice cream is the purest expression of creamy, frozen deliciousness.
In a large bowl, whisk the sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Add the milk and vanilla. Whisk until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Stir in the cream. In an ice cream machine, churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Eat right away for a soft serve–like texture. Or freeze in a covered container until firm, at least 4 hours.
