You could have microwave popcorn at the press of a button, but stovetop popcorn is a lot more fun to make—and endlessly customizable.
In a medium pot with a lid, heat 3 tbsp. vegetable oil over medium. Add 3 popcorn kernels; cover. When they start to pop, add 1/2 cup popcorn kernels. Cover, shaking pot constantly, until popping subsides, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl. In a small pan, melt 2 tbsp. butter over medium. Pour over popcorn, season with salt and toss to coat.
