His New Dad
Nathan Fischer, who a dopted him from Lone Woof Rescue in Jean, NV (lonewoofrescue.org)
After years of struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, Iraq War veteran Fischer reached out to Pets for Vets, which matches former soldiers with companion dogs. His perfect match, Spanky, worked with a trainer for several weeks before going home with him.
Up and At 'Em
“He peeks around blind corners for me,” Fischer says. “When I sit down, he lies on my feet so that even if he falls asleep, he’ll wake up the moment I start moving.”
Work and Play
When Spanky is off duty, he loves “running around like crazy” with Fischer’s 6-year-old daughter, Rilee. “If he knows I have treats, he trots out all his tricks—sitting, rolling over—like, ‘I know what’s up.’ ”
