As we approach peak fruit fly season, we've been testing out some tips, tricks, and hacks in our Test Kitchen and in our homes to see what works and what doesn't when it comes to keeping these pests away. Of course, we all know that overripe fruits and veggies are a magnet for fruit flies, but there's another common culprit, one you probably have sitting out on your counter right now.

It's onions! Especially if you buy them in bulk bags, these alliums can be a breeding ground for fruit flies. 

So what should you do? Store those onions by themselves (not with bananas!) in a cool, dark place or, if you have space, stick 'em in the fridge. Then again, you could always slice them up and turn them into onion rings...
