Blame it on the blogosphere. A few years ago, someone somewhere in a marble-counter kitchen flooded with natural light dehydrated watermelon and called it jerky. (Or at least that’s how we assume it happened. How else do food trends start these days?) We began seeing it on our Insta feed, then the clean-eating meal service Sakara came out with a 1.75-ounce bag of watermelon jerky that costs $13, and now a handful of brands—Solely, N.B.T.F. (Nothing but the Fruit), Watermelon Road—have jumped into the fruit jerky game. But here’s the thing: The stuff is tasty. It’s chewy, not too sweet, and available in fun flavors like Pineapple Mojito, Salted Watermelon Jalapeño & Chia, and Organic Banana with Cacao. OK, Internet. You’ve won this round.
