Taste Test: The Best Greek Yogurts
With so many different kinds of greek yogurt at the grocery store, it may be hard to decide which one to buy. We tasted over 150 different kinds to find the best of the bunch.
It's All Greek
Greek yogurt is becoming more and more popular in supermarkets. Why you ask? Greek yogurt is strained to remove excess liquid and sugar. Compared to regular yogurt, it has a thicker texture; a tangier, less sweet flavor; and more stability for cooking. It also contains up to twice as much protein and about half the sodium and carbs.
We tasted over 150 kinds to find the best-tasting in five different categories so you didn't have to!
Best Low-Fat Plain
Wallaby Organic Greek Plain Lowfat Yogurt: Made with organic milk from Napa Valley farms, this 2%-fat yogurt is mildly tart and ultracreamy, but not too heavy. Try it on baked potatoes or stirred into soups and curries. ($1.99 for 6 oz.)
Runner-Up: Fage Total 2% ($1.59 for 7 oz.)
Fage Total 0% with Blueberry Acai: Eighty-seven-year-old Fage ("fa-yeh") won over the panel with its separate compartment of lip-puckering blueberry-acai jam. "You can customize the sweet-tart flavor by adjusting the amount of fruit," noted one taster. ($1.59 for 5.3 oz.)
Runner-Up: Liberte Greek Blackberry Yogurt ($1.29 for 5.3 oz.)
Best Fat-Free Plain
Kirkland Signature Plain Nonfat Greek Yogurt: This Costco brand impressed with its richness. "I'm amazed it's fat-free," raved one panelist. The mild taste makes it good for fruit smoothies; plus, its two 32-ounce tubs, sold together, are a serious bargain. ($6.99 for 64 oz., at Costco stores)
Runner-Up: Chobani Plain Non-Fat Greek Yogurt ($1.29 for 6 oz.)
Best Guilt-Free Treat
