Seattle

STARBUCKS In a town full of indie cafés, the siren's song is still strong. At the original Starbucks, where the faithful get their latte fixes ($2.50 for a tall), you can see the original siren logo with her (gasp) bare breasts. The shop, opened in 1971, looks lived in: There's a worn hardwood floor and a rolling ladder. (1912 Pike Pl., 206-448-8762)
CAFFÈ UMBRIA Seattle espresso aficionados got edgy when Starbucks bought out local favorite minichain Torrefazione Italia in 2005 and started closing down the cafés. But Emanuele Bizzarri, the son of Torrefazione's founder, has launched his own coffee roasting operation—Caffè Umbria—in Torrefazione's former flagship store on historic Pioneer Square. Sip the smooth, nuanced blend ($1.75 for a regular) and decide for yourself which is the better brew. (320 Occidental Ave. S., 206-624-5847)
