Anchorage

The masses arrive in March for Alaska's famed Iditarod dogsled race—and some tasty local grub.

Tried & True / Best-Kept Secrets
SHIRLEY'S CLASSIC HOT DOGS Reindeer meat makes for a tasty hot dog--as you'll learn when you bite into one of Shirley Coble's famous sausages, spiced with coriander and topped with caramelized onions. She sells them during the Iditarod dogsled race, then the street cart closes until summer. (corner of E St. and Fourth Ave., 907-830-4637) Reindeer JEN'S RESTAURANT Game meat is always on the menu at this secluded, candlelit restaurant. Look for entrées like oven-roasted loin of reindeer with chestnuts and wild berries ($28). After an aging waiter in a bow tie delivers the check, you can head to the bar to browse the owner's stack of cookbooks and sip one of 14 types of port. (701 W. 36th Ave., 907-561-5367)
