My husband and I took a vacation inspired by one of our favorite novels. We bought the book on CD, and listened as we drove. We stayed, visited and ate at the places that were described in the book. It made for a really unique and fun experience-and we plan to do it again. Patricia Vickery - Southaven, MS

Runners-Up

While driving from Pennsylvania to Florida, we exited to get dinner in Virginia. We took a wrong turn and ended up at a beautiful river. We bagged the "chain restaurant" idea, opting to stop at the local market for a picnic. Connie Galietti - Havana, FL

I was thrilled when I discovered that my favorite restaurant offered cooking classes. I had a great time, learned to cook some amazing dishes, and made some new friends with whom I still get together for a weekly cooking night. Elizabeth Svensen - San Diego, CA

The eight-hour ferry ride across the Bay of Fundy from Maine to Nova Scotia is the most fun anyone and their vehicle can have in one day. And then, after you disembark, you can explore either coast of Nova Scotia. It's like doing Europe without crossing the Atlantic. Elaine Crozier - Saugerties, NY

While dining in Albany, New York, I discovered the eighth wonder of the world: The Miss Albany Diner. It is a charming old-style diner that serves a dish called Mad Irish Toast: French toast stuffed with pecan cream cheese filling and smothered in butterscotch Irish whiskey sauce. Karen Modric - Brooklyn, NY

My best party theme to date was "bring a dish from your ethnic background." The dishes were varied and tasty, and it really got the conversation going. We actually learned quite a lot about one another in a laid-back fashion. Ellen Griffin - Mercerville, NJ

Crater of Diamonds State Park, near Munsfreesboro, Arkansas, provides and exciting digging adventure. Best of all, you get to keep any diamonds you unearth! Violet Lyford - Coon Rapids, MN

Volunteer with a non-profit relief agency. I've traveled to Guatemala, St. Croix and central Africa, and had life-changing encounters. Each trip is truly a give-and-take experience. It's an inspiration to step outside the box and make a difference in our world. Karin Soderberg - San Diego, CA

The rustic LeConte Lodge is Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains National Park is at the end of an unforgettable hike up the Alum Cave Trail. All the fresh food is brought up the mountain by a packtrain of llamas! Terri Traut - Sterling Heights, MI

One of the biggest adrenaline rushes I ever experienced was while rafting the Rogue River in Oregon. I will never forget the sound of rushing water, the thrill of the rapids, and the camaraderie of the friends I shared the adventure with. It was exhilarating! James Holfish - Middlebury, VT
