Valerie Bertinelli

From Every Day with Rachael Ray
May 2008

The actress dishes on her new book and (very public) diet.

6:45 a.m.  Every morning is different, but I always turn on the coffeemaker and grab the newspaper crossword—I'm a puzzle junkie.

7:15 a.m.  This morning, I drop off my boyfriend, Tom, for his flight to Arizona. I stop at Gelson's grocery store—I'm making spaghetti and meatballs for dinner tomorrow.

8:30 a.m.  I wake my son, Wolfie, who's 17—he has school in the house because he's on tour with Van Halen, playing with his dad. I have a cup of coffee with whole—not skim—milk!

9 a.m.  For breakfast, I have a Jenny Craig sandwich—an English muffin with Canadian bacon and eggs. I add fat-free cheese and mustard.

1 p.m.  I squeeze in a workout on the elliptical and do jumps and abs.

2 p.m.  I'm usually hungry after exercising so lunch is a Jenny Craig turkey burger for me and a grilled ham-and-cheese for Wolfie.

My favorite dessert is a Skinny Cow ice cream treat. They're not just for dieters— even Wolfie goes into the freezer for them!

4 p.m.  If I'm feeling snacky, I grab pretzels or apples and peanut butter. After three decades of dieting (and writing a book about it), I know what to do; it's about sticking with good habits. I hope women identify with my book, Losing It—And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time ($26, Free Press), and say, "That happened to me."

7 p.m.  For dinner, I make a big salad and Jenny Craig chicken carbonara while I watch The Office on TiVo.

11 p.m.  Bed! I'm so exhausted at night that I can barely keep my eyes open long enough to wash my face.
