Celebrity Fridge

Bryan Adams

From Every Day with Rachael Ray
December-January 2009

The rocker and part-time photographer turns the camera on his vegan-friendly fridge—and on himself!

Rachael Ray: I love your self-portrait in front of your fridge. You're the first celebrity to take his own photo for the magazine. How long has photography been a hobby?

Bryan Adams: I've been shooting for about 10 years. I try to keep myself occupied and be as creative as possible. Any money that I make from my photography goes toward my Bryan Adams Foundation, which funds groups committed to helping others.

RR: What a great way to have fun while helping people! I see a lot of fruit and vegetables in your fridge—looks like you're a healthy guy.

BA: I've been vegan for 20 years. I actually went completely raw for a year recently, and I never got sick. I didn't even have a headache—it was unbelievable. So now I still try to eat raw about 50 percent of the time.

RR: Were there any foods you missed eating?

BA: I love potato chips and bread. Going without them for a whole year was so unfair. And whenever I'd go out to dinner with a friend who ordered pizza I'd think, "Oh, God, I just have to have a slice of that." But I was good. I'd soldier on and eat my salad.

RR: I love bread, too. I definitely couldn't go very long without picking up a crusty loaf. Bread and cheese are my weaknesses. Well, your raw diet explains all the pineapples.

BA: I juice pineapple and ginger every morning. I'm addicted to peaches, so sometimes I toss a few of them in the blender, too. I always have my juicer with me—even when I'm on tour.

RR: What are your other staples?

BA: I always have a few boxes of dates on hand. My favorites are medjool dates—they're delicious and fresher than regular ones. I eat them with almonds or sunflower seeds throughout the day.

RR: I also see a bottle of champagne in your fridge.

BA: That's for my guests. You never know when there'll be a reason to celebrate. And, you know, women like to have a glass of champagne, so I make sure I have a bottle chilling.

RR: A man with a plan! It's always good to be prepared. Speaking of guests, if you could have anyone over for dinner, living or dead, who would you invite?

BA: Well, I'd love to have you come by, Rachael. I'd make you rigatoni pasta with pesto sauce. I love pesto, but I make mine without any cheese. Or maybe I'll make you a raw meal instead—I bet you could survive it!
