Hot Diggity Dog!

It seems that every summer one very important question lingers in the air “Hamburger or hot dog?!” and while we’re a fan of the burger (Rach wrote a whole book on ‘em!) we can’t argue against the love for a delicious bite of a grilled dog sandwiched between a pillowy bun. And it looks like we’re not alone—July 23 marks national hot dog day and for good reason! According to recent polls, a quarter of Americans eat only hot dogs during grilling season!

Want some more hot dog celebrating trivia? According to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, we eat about 7 billion hot dogs during the summer—that’s 818 hot dogs per second! In honor of National Onion Ring Day, here are some fun facts you probably didn’t know about the one vegetable that makes us cry:

 

  • The origin of onion rings is not confirmed. Some believe that a 1933 Crisco ad featured in The New York Times Magazine was the start to a deep-fried revolution. Some trust the Pig Stand restaurant chain, founded in Oak Cliff, Texas to be the founder. Nonetheless, A&W is credited with popularizing the novelty, while some people simply think this was a randomly selected day to eat some yummy food. Whose side are you on?
  • Recently, The Riders 4 Relief National Onion Ring Eating Championship Presented by The Warehouse Stean n’ Stein was officially announced! First place wins $700 and a trophy. Time to get your eat on!
  • According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest onion ever grown was in Silsden, England at a whopping 10 lbs. 14 oz.

Here’s our solution to cheese that melts everywhere: stuffed patties! Just form your meat around a piece of cheese, then grill. Now you’ll get melted cheesiness when you bite into your burger instead of all over your grate. This will also help prevent the common raw-in-the-middle problem. And stop pressing on those patties while they grill! You may think you’re helping them cook faster, but you’re only squeezing out the delicious juices.
